WTEN Preview \\ Minnesota, Wisconsin

The 32nd-ranked Iowa women’s tennis team will host No. 72 Minnesota at 5 p.m. on Friday, before facing No. 18 Wisconsin on Sunday at noon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Admission is free.

THIS WEEK
The 32nd-ranked University of Iowa women’s tennis team will host a pair of ranked Big Ten home matches this weekend outdoors at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes will take on No. 72 Minnesota at 5 p.m. on Friday, before facing No. 18 Wisconsin on Sunday at noon. Admission is free.

THE OPPONENTS
• The Gophers are 8-8 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten play. This spring, Minnesota is 2-0 in the state of Iowa, defeating Air Force, 4-0, on Feb. 1 and Iowa State, 4-3, on Feb. 2 at the McKee Indoor Tennis Complex in Ames.
• The Badgers are currently 10-1 overall and 3-0 in Big Ten play. Wisconsin has won nine straight matches with its only loss coming against North Carolina on Jan. 26.
• Wisconsin’s Maria Sholokhova is the 5th-ranked singles player nationally, while the Badgers also have three ranked doubles tandems. Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova being ranked 19th, Taylor Cataldi and Ellison Reynoldson are 42nd, while Sholokhova and Ariel Johnson are 85th.

LAST MATCH
The Hawkeyes went undefeated in the state of Illinois, defeating No. 46 Illinois 4-1 on March 14 before securing a 4-3 win at No. 38 Northwestern on March 16. It was Iowa’s third win all-time over the Wildcats and the first since 1992.

DEJNOZKOVA NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Junior Tereza Dejnozkova was named the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on March 19 after posting a 4-0 record in Hawkeye wins over No. 46 Illinois and No. 38 Northwestern. She clinched Iowa’s 4-3 win over Northwestern, the program’s first over the Wildcats in 15 years.

QUICK HITTERS
• Iowa’s 9-4 start to the season is the best for the program since the 2016-17 campaign when the team finished nonconference play 11-3.
• Iowa is 7-0 this spring when opening the match by claiming the doubles points.
• Iowa returns six letterwinners from a team that won 13 matches and finished tied for sixth in the Big Ten standings during the 2024 season.
• Senior Barbora Pokorna is 8-1 in singles this spring, with six of her eight victories coming in straight sets. Pokorna has played at the Nos. 4-6 singles positions for the team.
Sasha Boros is in her ninth season as Iowa’s head coach. The Iowa alum has guided the Hawkeyes to 98 victories during her eight-year tenure. She has 275 wins as a head coach in stops at Stetson, Missouri and Iowa.
• Boros is two wins shy of win No. 100 at Iowa. She will become the third Hawkeye head coach to reach the 100 career win mark.

IN THE RANKINGS
Iowa is ranked No. 32 in the March 18 ITA team rankings -- its highest ranking of the season, the highest ranking of the Boros era and the highest team ranking since 2010.
Junior Tereza Dejnozkova comes in at No. 106 in the singles rankings, while Dejnozkova and Nikita Vishwase are No. 76 in the doubles rankings -- a season high.

TESS = BIG TEN PRESEASON PLAYER TO WATCH
Junior Tereza Dejnozkova has been named a Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch for the 2025 season. The Czech Republic native has posted a 14-7 overall singles and 10-7 doubles record this season, which included a third-place finish at the ITA Central Regionals in October. It was the highest finish by a Hawkeye all-time.
• Dejnozkova transferred to Iowa from South Alabama, where she was a second-team All-Sun Belt selection as a sophomore. She won 32 singles and 23 doubles matches during her two seasons.
• The Czech Republic native has posted a 8-3 record this spring with the six wins being tied for the second-most on the team. She made her Hawkeye debut at the No. 1 singles position in the win over DePaul on Feb. 9.

DAI’S STRONG FALL
Junior Daianne Hayashida had a team-best seven singles victories during the fall season, posting a 7-3 overall record. She also won four matches, teamming with Marisa Schmidt in doubles.
• Hayashida won the consolation singles title at the ITA Sectionals in Ann Arbor in November.
• The Peru native is 7-4 in dual action this spring.
• Hayashida, who earned All-Big Ten recognition as a sophomore, has 46 career singles and 37 career doubles victories.

MARISA RETURNS
Senior Marisa Schmidt returns for her final season as a Hawkeye after posting a team-best 13-5 singles record during the 2024 season. She posted a 12-1 record at the No. 2 singles position a season ago.
• The Germany native has 45 career singles and 35 career doubles victories.
