Iowa Defeats Michigan State in Big Ten Opener

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Iowa women's gymnastics team earned its first conference win of the season against Michigan State, 193.375-192.900, at the Jenison Field House on Saturday evening.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team earned its first conference win of the season against Michigan State, 193.375-192.900, at the Jenison Field House on Saturday evening.
 
34530MEET HIGHLIGHTS
After trailing in the first two events, Iowa rebounded, winning floor and beam to secure the victory. Two GymHawks took home event titles and the team registered 12 top-three finishes to highlight the competition.
 
ALL-AROUND
Sophomore Charlotte Sullivan finished third in the all-around with a career-high 38.375.
 
BARS
The Hawkeyes were down, 48.125-47.650, after the first rotation. Senior Melissa Zurawski and junior Maria Ortiz tied for third with scores of 9.750. This marked a career-high for Ortiz.
 
VAULT
Iowa continued to trail the Spartans (96.750-96.300) after recording a 48.650 on vault. Ortiz won the event with a 9.775, while senior Nikki Youd followed in second place with a score of 9.750. Junior Nicole Chow placed third with a 9.725, and junior Misty-Jade Carlson and Sullivan tied for fourth with scores of 9.700.
 
FLOOR
The GymHawks took the lead, 144.950-144.275, after registering a 48.650 on floor. Senior Lanie Snyder and sophomore Clair Kaji tied for third with scores of 9.750. Sullivan and Zurawski followed in fifth, each posting a 9.725.
 
BEAM
Iowa secured the victory with a 48.425 on beam. Junior Sydney Hogan took home the event title with a 9.850 in her competition debut. Youd placed second with a 9.825, while Kaji and Sullivan finished in third with scores of 9.775.
  
UP NEXT
The GymHawks host Ohio State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. (CT). The first 500 fans to arrive will receive a free poster and parking is free.
