The University of Iowa men and women’s track and field teamkicked off the 2003 NCAA Championships, Thursday, at Hornet Stadium in Sacramento, CA.Two Hawkeyes athletes, junior Shellene Williams and sophomore Bill Neumann, have movedon in the 400 meters and javelin, respectively.
Neumann led the Hawkeyes as he qualified for the finals in the javelin throw. Neumannfinished in seventh place in the preliminaries after recording a toss of 230-6. Pennsylvania’sBrian Chaput leads the event with a distance of 248-6.On the women’s side, Williams qualified for the semi-finals in the 400-meters afterfinishing 15th with a personal best time of 52.85. The semi-finals will be held on Friday night.
Strand just missed qualifying for the finals in the pole vault after she finished tied for 15th aftervaulting 12-9 1/2. The leaders qualified for the finals with a height of 13-1 ?.Sophomore Alana Redfern finished 17th in the preliminaries of the javelin throw with adistance of 150-1. Senior Sarah Arens finished in 26th place in the 3,000-meter steeplechasewith a time of 10:39.94.
The 1,600-meter relay consisting of sophomore Aisha Hume, seniors Nicole Charlesand Sarah Steffen and Williams will compete in the preliminaries later today at Hornet Stadium.The relay is scheduled to begin at 8:05 p.m. Neumann will compete in the finals of the javelinthrow tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m. All times listed are Pacific Standard time.
