University of Iowa Head Men’s Cross Country and Track Coach Larry Wieczorek has been named Midwest Region Cross Country Coach of the Year by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association.
Earning the honor for the first time in his career, Wieczorek led the 2002 Iowa men’s cross country team to a first-ever first-place finish at the Midwest Regional last November. The Hawkeye win clinched an automatic berth to the 2002 NCAA Championships. It was Iowa’s second visit to the national meet in five seasons. Five Hawkeyes earned all-region honors.
Wieczorek’s regional honor nominated him for the USCCCA Division I Men’s Coach of the Year award, which went to Stanford University Head Coach Vin Lananna. Lananna led the Cardinals to their third NCAA title last season.
Wieczorek and the Iowa men’s track team will compete at the 92nd annual Big Ten Indoor Championships Saturday and Sunday in Champaign, IL.
