April Mech Q&A

Oct. 15, 2003

What is your favorite volleyball-related memory?
“My favorite volleyball-related memory is making it to state my senior year of high school. The match that we had to win to advance took over two-and-a-half hours. It was really exciting when we pulled it out.”

Do you have any pre-match rituals or superstitions?
“Before every game I write down on a little piece of paper who we are going to play and how many kills and digs I want to get in the match. Then I put it in my shoe. I know it’s strange, but it keeps my goals in mind.”

What attracted you to the University of Iowa?
“I really like the atmosphere here on campus. There are just so many great things to get involved in and a lot of opportunities that Iowa provides.”

What activities or hobbies do you do in your spare time or in the off-season?
“I like to play the piano when I get the chance or when I am in the mood. It is really calming. I also like to play golf when I get the chance.”

In her first collegiate match, Mech posted a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.

If you were given three wishes, what would you wish for?
“The first would be world peace, of course. The second would be that my family and I would always be well off and in good health and the third would be a lifetime supply of cinnamon toast crunch. The best cereal in the world!”

What impresses you the most about Coach Buck-Crockett?
“What impresses me most about Rita is her awesome commitment to the game. She was a phenomenal player and now is a good coach and tries to promote and excite people about the sport as much as she can.”

Describe the perfect day. What would you do?
“I would wake up about 10 and have breakfast in bed. Then for the rest of the day I’d just hang out at the beach with my friends and then go to a movie at night. Then I would eat dinner with my family and that night I’d go out with my friends again.”

What do you do to unwind after a match?
“After a match I normally listen to music and try to get my mind off of volleyball for a few minutes and just relax.”

If you had to sing karaoke, what song would you sing and would you sing it with anyone else?
“If I was ‘karaokeing’ I would probably sing an Outkast song because I love Outkast and I would definitely go with the other volleyball gals. We would have a blast.”

What is your most prized possession?
“My ring that my parents got me for my 18th birthday. If I could wear it while I was playing volleyball I would.”

What is something that few people know about you?
“I am the biggest goofball when I get tired. Everything becomes funny to me and if it isn’t, then I will make it out to be the most hilarious thing ever in the history of funny things.”
