Big Ten Championship Awaits Hawkeyes

THIS WEEK

The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to East Lansing, MI, Sunday to compete in the Big Ten Championships on the campus of Michigan State. The women’s 6,000-meter race will begin at 9:45 a.m. and the men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Forest Akers West Golf Course.

NATIONAL POLLS

The United States Cross Country Coaches Association sponsored by MONDO ranks the Hawkeyes 30th nationally and fourth in the Midwest Region. MONDO ranks five Big Ten teams in the national poll; Wisconsin (2), Michigan (6), Ohio State (7), Indiana (19) and Iowa.

IOWA AT THE 2002 CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Iowa men finished seventh at the Big Ten Chamionships in 2002. Sophomore Micah VanDenend paced the effort with a 27th place finish. The women finished 11th last season. Senior Sarah Arens led all Hawkeyes, finishing 58th overall.

HAWKEYE COACH Larry Wieczorek

Larry Wieczorek is in his 17th season as Iowa men’s head cross country coach. In the past five years, Iowa has placed no lower than sixth at the NCAA Regional, including a first place finish at the 2002 NCAA Regional, the highest finish in school history.
