Hawkeyes Continue Hot Streak

Ames, IA – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s track team qualified three student-athletes for the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships on Saturday. Senior Shellene Williams automatically qualified in the 400 meters while freshman Peaches Roach provisionally qualified in the high jump. Senior Ken Kemeny provisionally qualified in the shot put for the second time this season. Junior Aisha Hume also set the ISU Classic meet record in the 600 yards.

The Hawkeye women have now qualified six events for the 2004 NCAA Championships (200, 400, 3,000 meters, mile, high jump, distance medley). Williams finished second in the 400 meters, breaking the school-record with a season best and qualifying time of 52.83. This is the second week in a row that Williams has broken a school-record. Last week at the Husker Invitational, Williams broke the school-record in the 200 meters. She has now qualified in three events. Roach finished third in the high jump, provisionally qualifying with a season and collegiate best leap of 5-10 ? (1.79 m). Hume brought home first place in the 600 yards with a season and collegiate best time of 1:21.714. Her first place finishing time broke the ISU Classic meet record. The women set season best times in eight events while recording 12 collegiate best times in Ames this weekend.

For the men, Kemeny provisionally qualified in the shot put with a second place finishing throw of 59-10 ? (18.25 m). His previous qualifying throw was 59-5 ? (18.13 m). Junior Matt O’Hollearn finished eighth in the 600 yards with a time of 1:12.06. The Hawkeyes recorded season best times in five events and set nine collegiate best times.

The Hawkeye men’s and women’s teams will host the Iowa Open on Friday, February 20 at the University of Iowa Recreation Building. Field events are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. with running events starting at 6:30 p.m. Competing teams include Augustana, Coe and Loras.
