Keely Huber, a junior from Oelwein, Iowa, on the Univeristy of Iowa women’s track team, has been added to the McLeodUSA StarHawks team.

Huber, who specializes in hurdles and sprints, had a very good freshman season. Indoors she led the team in the 500 meter races and outdoors she placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a personal-best time of 1:00.98, which ranks eighth on Iowa’s best times list.

In 2003, Huber was the runner-up in the 600 yards race at the Adidas Classic during the indoor season, and the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at both the Arlington Innvitational and the KT Woodman Classic during the outdoor season.

“Keely has performed well for us from the beginning,” said UI Head Coach James Grant. “In fact, she was the only freshman who scored for us in 2002. She hasn’t been able to compete for us during this indoor season due to injury, but we are very eager to have her healthy and ready for the outdoor season. Since she’s very dedicated and trains hard, I feel confident she’ll continue to score for us when she returns just as she’s done in the past.”

“Keely is very dedicated to community service as well as to athletics. I depend on her to help me coordinate the outreach we do as a team. I know I can call on Keely anytime I need help, and that’s not only of great benefit to me, but to the team as well.”

Huber represents the team on the Iowa Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, a group of student-athletes from each of the UI’s varsity sports programs who help to shape departmental policies and procedures and to initiate department-wide out reach programs.

“Keely is very dedicated to community service as well as to athletics,” Grant said. “I depend on her to help me coordinate the outreach we do as a team. I know I can call on Keely anytime I need help, and that’s not only of great benefit to me, but to the team as well.”

Huber is majoring in health, leisure and sports studies, and is a solid student according to Grant. “Keely is a pleasure to have on the team,” he said. “In addition to being a dedicated student and athlete, she is a genuinely nice person. The rapport she has with her teammates is just one more contribution she brings to the team.”

The StarHawks program is an initiative funded in part by McLeodUSA, a leading telecommunications company with corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids and a long-time member of the UI’s Partners in Excellence corporate sponsorship program. The StarHawks team is a collection of student-athletes at the University of Iowa who truly represent the very best the intercollegiate athletics program at the UI has to offer. StarHawks typically excel athletically and academically, and also are active in community or leadership activities.
