University of Iowa President David Skorton today (March 8) appointed Iowa Deputy Attorney General Douglas R. Marek to investigate a March 5 report in the Manhattan (Kansas) Mercury newspaper involving a student-athlete who was being recruited by the University of Iowa last fall.

“I’ve been very proud of the record of integrity of the teams in our athletics program and, in particular, I’ve been very proud of the academic record and the record of integrity of Hawkeye football. Nonetheless, an allegation was made that I take very seriously and felt the need and still feel the need to expeditiously and expertly run this issue to ground so that we know to the best of our ability what actually happened,” Skorton said earlier today when introducing Marek.
