STANFORD, CA – The University of Iowa men’s track and field team qualified four competitors for the 2004 NCAA Regional Championships at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday in Stanford, CA. Seniors Ken Kemeny and Brad Daufeldt, junior Matt Esche and sophomore Adam Hamilton all qualified for the regional meet with their performances at Cobb Track and Angell Field. Over 4,200 participants from the college, high school and post-college ranks competed at the meet.
Daufeldt and Hamilton qualified in the hammer throw, with Daufeldt placing second in the “B” section with a personal-best 198-1 and Hamilton placing ninth in the top section with a toss of 195-10. Daufeldt also placed ninth in the top section of the discus (167-8), and Hamilton placed 19th in the “B” section of the shot put (47-5 3/4). Kemeny qualifed in the shot put, placing seventh in the top section with a throw of 59-11. He also placed 14th in the discus “B” section with a personal-best 155-7. Esche qualified in the 5,000 meters with a personal-best 14:15.73.
The rest of Iowa’s competitors were led by senior Zach Digney’s eighth-place finish in the 200-meter top section (21.73). Junior Brian Rae ran a personal-best 14:22.83 in the 5,000 meters and senior Russell Peterson ran a personal-best 14.85 in the 110-meter hurdles.
The Hawkeyes’ next competition will be April 2-3 at the Missouri Relays in Columbia, MO.
