THIS WEEK — The women’s golf team travels to West Lafayette, IN, to compete in the Lady Boilermaker Invitational. The tournament will be held on the par-72 (5,900 yds.) Kampen Golf Course. Competition begins on Saturday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. with 36 holes of play. The tournament concludes on Sunday with the final round starting at 8 a.m. The 12-team field is highlighted by six teams ranked in the top 50, which includes Michigan State (19), Kent State (37), Indiana (38), Northwestern (41), Purdue (42) and Michigan (48). It also features every Big Ten team except for Ohio State and Penn State, which will gear the Hawkeyes for next weekend’s Big Ten Championships.
LINEUP — Competing this week for the Hawkeyes are seniors Laura Holmes and Jennifer Reints, juniors Liz Bennett and Shannon Fleming, and freshmen Amy Riepma and Virginie Bonfils.
LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes had a solid showing at the Indiana Invitational. Iowa finished fourth in the 15-team field, which featured five ranked teams. Leading the Hawkeyes was junior Liz Bennett. Bennett fired a three-round total of 227, which tied her for sixth. Senior Jennifer Reints tied for 27th with a score of 238.
LAST TIME AT LADY BOILERMAKER — The Hawkeyes finished tenth in a 13-team field. Iowa was led by Laura Holmes. Holmes tied for eighth after posting a 54-hole total of 226.
LEADING THE HAWKEYES — Junior Liz Bennett has led Iowa in the last two competitions. Bennett had finished in the top 12 in three out of four tournaments this spring. She is coming off her best performance of the spring season. Bennett tied for sixth at the Indiana Invitational. She is currently leading the Hawkeyes in rounds played (11), scoring average (76.3) and lowest single round (71).
QUOTING CARNEY — “This is a strong lineup with any of our girls capable of shooting low scores. The team is feeling quite confident after our finish at the Indiana Invitational. This competition will be a good challenge and should be of similar quality as our upcoming Big Ten Championships. We are all looking forward to the Lady Boilermaker Invitational.”
HEAD WOMEN’S COACH Bobbe Carney — Coach Carney is in her second year as coach of the Hawkeyes. Her resume is highlighted, most notably, by being named LPGA Midwest Section Coach of the Year in 1989. In 2001, she was named a Top 50 Instructor by Golf For Women magazine.
