WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – The University of Iowa women’s golf team shot a final round of 321 to total 935 strokes in the three rounds of competition this weekend. The Hawkeyes finished fifth in the very strong 12-team Lady Boilermaker Invitational field. The six Hawkeyes competing all finished in the top 35 individually. Michigan State took the team title after posting a 54-hole total of 918.
Leading the way for the Hawkeyes was senior Laura Holmes. Holmes fired a 54-hole total of 230 to come from a tie for 15th after the first day of competition to finish the tournament in a tie for sixth. Junior Liz Bennett recorded a 234 to finish tied for 16th. Senior Jennifer Reints finished 26th after posting a score of 237. Freshman Amy Riempa shot a three-round total of 239 to finish in 28th. Junior Shannon Fleming shot a 242, which tied her for 29th. Freshman Virginie Bonfils tied for 31st with a score of 243. Indiana’s Dana Ford held on to win the individual title with a final round score of 82. Ford totaled 221 strokes over the two days of competition, three strokes ahead of Northwestern’s Alice Kim.
The Hawkeyes will continue competition next weekend at the Big Ten Championships. Competition will be held at The Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, OH on April 23-25.
