Hawkeyes to Battle Big Ten Foes

THIS WEEK — The women’s golf team travels to Columbus, OH to compete in the Big Ten Championships. The par-72 Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course will be hosting the competition. The tournament will begin Friday with 36 holes of play. The first round will begin at 7 a.m. and will be followed by the second round about 11:15 a.m. The final two 18-hole rounds will be Saturday and Sunday. The third round will begin at 8 a.m. and the final round on Sunday at 7 a.m. Livestats will available on www.golfstat.com or also on www.hawkeyesports.com on the Hawkeyes women’s golf schedule/results page.

LINEUP — Competing for the Hawkeyes are seniors Laura Holmes and Jennifer Reints, juniors Liz Bennett and Shannon Fleming, and freshmen Amy Riepma and Virginie Bonfils.

LAST COMPETITION — The Hawkeyes had a solid showing at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational. Iowa finished fifth in the 12-team field, which featured six teams ranked in the top 50. Leading the Hawkeyes was senior Laura Holmes. Holmes fired a three-round total of 230, which tied her for sixth. Junior Liz Bennett recored a 54-hole total of 234 to finish tied for 16th. All six Hawkeyes competing in the tournament finished in the top 35.

LAST SEASON AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS — The Hawkeyes finished tenth in the 11-team field. The tournament was held in Iowa City at Finkbine Golf Course. Iowa was led by Liz Bennett, who fired a four-round total of 300 to tie for fifth. Jennifer Reints tied for 42nd with a 319.

QUOTING CARNEY — “This lineup has been performing well the past several tournaments. Looking at our recent performances, I think it is very possible for us to finish high this coming week. We have knocked off all of the Big 10 teams except Ohio State and Michigan State. The team is feeling very confident right now and believe they can have a strong Big Ten performance.
