THIS WEEK — The Iowa men’s and women’s track teams will send seven athletes to the 2004 NCAA Championships, Wednesday thru Saturday (June 9-12) in Austin, TX. All events will be held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the Univerity of Texas campus. All-session reserved seats are $60, while general admission seats are $50 for adults and $30 for youth. Tickets are available from the athletic ticket office at www.TexasBoxOffice.com. Events start at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and noon on Saturday. The meet will include 1,100 athletes from across the country.

2004 NCAA MIDWEST REGIONAL REVIEW — Iowa automatically qualified five student-athletes for the 2004 NCAA Championships at the Midwest Regional in College Station, TX, last week. The five Hawkeyes each placed in the top five in their individual events to automatically qualify for the national meet. The Iowa women’s team finished tied for 12th place with 20 points, while the men’s team finished 15th with 15 points. Nebraska won the men’s team title with 86.25, while Texas won the women’s team title with 110.
Hawkeye seniors Sarah Arens, Shellene Williams, Brad Daufeldt and Ken Kemeny and freshman Peaches Roach qualified. Arens placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:39.31. Williams set a school record in the 400 meters, placing fourth in 52.41. Daufeldt placed fourth in the hammer throw (205-4), Kemeny placed fourth in the shot put (61-4 1/4) and Roach placed fifth in the high jump (5-10 1/2).
2003 NCAA REVIEW — Junior Bill Neumann earned his second all-America honor by placing third in the javelin with a season-best throw of 243-8 at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The women’s team qualified four individuals and one relay for the meet. Sarah Arens (3,000-meter steeplechase), Nicole Charles (1,600-meter relay), Aisha Hume (1,600-meter relay), Alana Redfern (javelin), Sarah Steffen (1,600-meter relay), Jessie Strand (pole vault) and Shellene Williams (400 meters and 1,600-meter relay) competed at the meet for Iowa.
IOWA IN NCAA HISTORY — The Iowa men’s track team has crowned 13 NCAA Champions and 79 all-Americans in program history. It’s highest finish at the NCAA outdoor meet was tying for seventh place in 1967. The women’s team has crowned three NCAA Champions and 37 all-Americans, and its highest finish at the NCAA meet was 19th in 1992. None of the current competitors on either team have earned all-America honors before.
