IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams both defeated Eastern Illinois Friday night at the Bill and James Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City. The Hawkeye women won 21-34 in their 3,000-meter race, and the Iowa men won 17-41 in their 6,000-meter race. In the women’s race, Hawkeye sophomores Shannon Stanley and Nikki Chapple posted a one-two punch, finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. Stanley won the race in 10:27 and Chapple placed second in 10:28. Junior Jenni Capista placed fourth in 11:27 and senior Laura Spencer placed fifth in 11:38. Senior Michelle Sokol rounded out Iowa’s scoring with a ninth-place finish in 11:48. Junior Vanessa Menze also competed for Iowa, placing 15th in 12:25. Eastern Illinois sophomore Sarah Selby led the Panthers, placing third in 11:01. In the men’s race, senior Matt Esche won in a time of 18:45 followed closely by his freshman teammate Eric MacTaggart who placed second in 18:47. Junior Dan Haut delivered a third place finish with a time of 18:50. Sophomore Micah VanDenend finished fifth with a time of 19:02 while sophomore Jeff Kent ran 19:09 to place sixth. Junior Adam Roche ran respectably with a time of 19:24 placing eighth and senior Josh Tweedy finished 15th running 20:51. Jake Stout led Eastern Illinois placing fourth in 18:53. The Hawkeyes will host a triangular Friday, September 10. The women’s team will host Northwestern and Loyola at 6 p.m. and the men’s team will host Wisconsin and Loyola at 6:45 p.m.
