THIS WEEK – The University of Iowa women’s cross country team will host a triangular with Loyola and Northwestern Friday at the Bill & James Ashton Cross Country Course beginning at 6 p.m. The race is 4,000 meters. The men will host Loyola and Wisconsin at 6:45 p.m and will run 8,000 meters. LAST WEEK – Both the men’s and women’s teams defeated Eastern Illinois last week in Iowa City. The Hawkeye women won 21-34 in the 3,000-meter race,while the Iowa men won 17-41 in the 6,000-meter race. Iowa sophomores Shannon Stanley and Nikki Chapple placed first and second, finishing over 30 seconds ahead of the third-place finisher. Stanley won the race in 10:27 with Chapple finishing right behind in 10:28. Junior Jenni Capista placed fourth in 11:27 and senior Laura Spencer placed fifth in 11:38. The Iowa men delivered a 1-2-3 finish. Senior Matt Esche paced the Hawkeyes. He won in a time of 18:45 and was followed closely by freshman Eric MacTaggart in 18:47. Junior Dan Haut finished third in 18:50. Sophomore Micah VanDenend placed fifth with a time of 19:02 while sophomore Jeff Kent ran 19:09 to place sixth. HAWKEYE COACH LARRY WIECZOREK – Larry Wieczorek is in his 18th season as Iowa men’s head cross country coach. In the past six years, Iowa has placed no lower than sixth at the NCAA Regional, including a first place finish at the 2002 NCAA Regional, the highest finish in school history. Wieczorek was a two-time Big Ten champion and a member of Iowa’s last Big Ten track championship team in 1967. Wieczorek owns Iowa records in the outdoor 5,000-meters and the indoor two mile. HAWKEYE COACH LAYNE ANDERSON – Layne Anderson enters his second season as Iowa women’s head cross country coach and assistant women’s track coach. In his first season at Iowa, Anderson guided the cross country team to a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Anderson served as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant track coach at Auburn University prior to joining the Iowa staff. During his tenure at Auburn, he coached seven all-Americans, two SEC champions and 58 academic all-SEC performers. QUOTING WIECZOREK – “We really did well last weekend. I was very pleased with our performance. Matt Esche, Eric MacTaggart and Dan Haut did a good job finishing 1-2-3, respectively. The good news is that we all know we can perform much better and that’s our goal this week.” QUOTING COACH ANDERSON – “I was very pleased with our performance. It is always nice to start the season with a win at home. Three of our our girls from last year ran much faster in this meet which was good to see. This outcome was what I hoped for. We will take it and move foward. I am eaager and anxious to see all of the freshmen and the rest of the team run this week.
