Orono, ME – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country teams earned respect from their east coast competitors this weekend in Orono, ME. Each team showed improvement from the beginning of the season. The men’s team finished third with 61 points while the women’s team followed right behind scoring 109 points to finish fourth.
Sophomore Nikki Chapple led the Hawkeyes in the women’s 5,000 meter race placing fifth in 17:18:30. Chapple was followed by teammate sophomore Shannon Stanley who ran to a 13th place finish in 17:47:50. Freshman Meghan Armstrong ran 18:01:30 to place 21st and fellow freshman Racheal Marchand finished 28th in 14:48. Southern Methodist won the meet with 35 points.
In the men’s 4.96 mile run, senior Matt Esche ran to third place in 25:30:60 to lead his teammates. Freshman Eric MacTaggart was close behind in 24:36:70: to finish sixth. Senior Tony Rakaric and sophomore Micah VanDenend placed 15th and 17th with times of 25:02:00 and 25:09:10. Sophomore Jeff Kent crossed the finish line in 25:11:80 to finish 20th. Dartmouth won with 35 points.
The Hawkeyes will compete in the Coe College Invitation in Cedar Rapids, IA October 2.
