LAWRENCE, KS – – The University of Iowa women’s golf team placed third in the 11-team Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational played today on the par-72 Alvamar Golf and Country Club. Additionally, senior Liz Bennett was crowned the individual medalist. Bennett has placed first in consecutive tournaments (Hawkeye Intercollegiate).
Bennett carded a 54-hole score of 230 (80-77-73), including a tournament 18-hole low of 73 in today’s final round. The native of Sway Hampshire, England, entered the final round five strokes behind the co-leaders. The senior won the tournament by one stroke over Denver’s Emily Hoeper (231).
Iowa entered the final round three strokes out of third place. The Hawkeyes fired a third round score of 316, which tied two other school’s (Kansas and UTEP) as the top round of the day, and leaped from sixth place to third (963). Host school Kansas (946) won the tournament by 15 strokes over second place UTEP (961).
Sophomore Karla Murra (Sioux Falls, SD) tied for 24th after firing a 245 (78-82-85). Freshman Jill Marcum (Clarinda, IA) tied for 27th after stroking a 247 (81-88-81). Sophomore Amy Riepma (Clear Lake, IA) placed 32nd after carding a 251 (81-88-82). Freshman Maggie Gelber (Winnetka, IL) tied for 33rd after shooting a 252 (89-83-80).
“I’m really proud of the way our team performed,” commented Head Coach Bobbe Carney. “I’m also extremely proud of Liz and what she accomplished. Liz described the course as the toughest she has ever played in collegiate golf.”
Iowa competes in its final fall tournament Sunday-Tuesday, Oct. 17-19, at the Lady Razorback Invitational in Rogers, AR.
