A New Facility

Oct. 25, 2004

For years, the UI cross country and track teams trained at Finkbine Golf Course, which required our student-athletes to run on fairways and concrete golf cart paths. The lack of adequate facilities meant that The University of Iowa was not able to host intercollegiate cross country meets for a number of years, which was disappointing to our dedicated coaches, team members, and local fans.

With the creation of the Ashton Cross Country Course, that all changed. The course will be dedicated on October 31, 2004, prior to the Big Ten Cross Country Championships. Our runners now have access to well-maintained running alleys, designed first and foremost for cross country running. This will allow the UI to sponsor other high-profile intercollegiate meets, as well as local and state high school meets. Plus, the new course offers exceptional recreation benefits — cross country skiing, jogging, walking, and Frisbee golf, to name a few — to the UI and surrounding community.
