RIO VERDE, AZ – The University of Iowa women’s golf team finished second (919) in the 18-team East/West Rio Verde Golf Invitational played on the par-71 White Wing Golf Course at the Rio Verde Country Club. This was Iowa’s first spring tournament.
Iowa carded a season-best 18-hole score of 297, which was the second best round of the tournament (Michigan, 296), which helped the Hawkeyes leap them past third-place Minnesota (921). Michigan (900) won the tournament by 19 strokes over the Hawkeyes.
Iowa was led by Liz Bennett and Amy Riepma. Bennett finished second after firing a seven-over par 220 for the 54-hole tournament. The senior fired rounds of 73, 74 and 73. Riepma placed fourth after carding a three-round score of 225. The sophomore tallied scores of 77, 79 and 69. Riepma’s career-best final round score of 69 was the tournament’s lowest 18-hole score. Michigan’s Laura Olin (218) won the individual crown by two strokes over Bennett.
The Hawkeyes return to action at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational in Orlando, FL, on March 13-14.
