ANN ARBOR, MI – The University of Iowa Women’s Golf Team is in sixth place after the first day of competition at the Big Ten Championships played today on the par-72 (5,966 yards) University of Michigan Golf Course. Playing conditions were less than ideal, with the student-athletes playing through cold temperatures and light rain for most of the day.
Iowa posted a 36-hole score of 625, which puts the Hawkeyes only three strokes behind fifth place Northwestern (622). Iowa was in fourth place after recording a 308 in the first round, but slipped to sixth after shooting a 317 in round two.
Iowa senior Liz Bennett paced the Hawkeyes after carding a 154 and is tied for 11th place. Sophomore Karla Murra is tied for 16th after posting a 156. Freshman Jill Marcum fired a 36-hole score of 157 and is tied for 22nd. Sophomore Amy Riepma finished the first day of competition tied for 27th after shooting a 158. Riepma was one of only three players to record an eagle today. She posted an eagle on the par-5, 419-yard fourth hole.
Three-time defending champion Ohio State (593) leads the championships by 19 strokes over second place Michigan State (612). Three Buckeyes led the championships: Kristen White (first), Lindsay Knowlton (tied-second) and Jennifer Selfinger (tied-second).
Third round action continues Saturday morning, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. (CDT). The final 18 holes will be played Sunday at 7 a.m. (CDT).
