July 1, 2005

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa Head Volleyball Coach Cindy Fredrick today announced the hiring of DeAnn Woodin as the new Director of Volleyball Operations. Woodin will work closely with the volleyball staff, helping coordinate the day-to-day activities of the program. She will be responsible for arranging team travel, overseeing the budget, monitoring academics, supervising public service activities and coordinating summer camps and training tables.

The Waverly, IA, native joins the Hawkeye staff after a successful run as head coach at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA. In her two seasons at the helm, Woodin led Kirkwood to an 81-25 record, two undefeated conference seasons and the school’s first-ever NJCAA Division II National Championship in 2003. Woodin was named NJCAA Division II District C Coach of the Year in both 2003 and 2004, and was the 2003 AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year.

Before taking over the head job at Kirkwood, Woodin was an assistant coach at Wartburg College during the 2002 season. She helped the Knights to their first Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and a record breaking 30-win season with a highest-ever ranking of No. 7.

As a player, Woodin began her career at the University of South Dakota before transferring to Northern Iowa. She played on the 1997 Panther team, then served as a student assistant, as well as junior club volleyball coach for the Waverly Volleyball Club.

After graduating from Northern Iowa with a degree in Finance, Woodin remained as a volunteer coach for two seasons.

The Hawkeyes will open their 2005 season hosting the Hawkeye-Holiday Inn Challenge August 26-27.
