MADISON, WI – The University of Iowa men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their seasons Thursday afternoon in the Natatorium on the University of Wisconsin. The Hawkeyes competed against the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. Both teams fell to the Badgers, the women by a score of 164-78 and the men by a score of 162-80. Both teams were strong in defeating the Panthers; the women by a score of 172-71 and the men by a score of 163-78. With the split, Iowa’s record is now 1-1 (0-1 Big Ten) for both the men and women, while Wisconsin improves to 3-0 (1-0 Big Ten) for both its men’s and women’s teams.

Freshman Nick Divan took top honors in the 1000 Yard Free with a time of 9:36.71 and senior Trevor Haley finished fourth with a time of 10:00.58. Sophomore Dragos Agache took first in the 200 Yard Breast with a time of 2:07.79 with teammate, junior Paul Divan, coming in third at 2:10.81. Freshman diver Drew DeLashmutt took the top score in the one meter competition with a score of 243.90 and freshman Adam Walker came in sixth at 219.19.

For the women, senior Katie Martin took first in the 100 Yard Free with a time of 52.42; teammates Karen Kelly, Robin Samples and Jeni Sanderson came in at sixth (54.32), seventh (55.27) and ninth (56.03) respectively. Senior diver Nancilea Underwood was first in the one meter competition with a score of 307.35, freshman Meghan Sievertsen was eighth with 187.35, sophomore Aimee Moylan followed at ninth with 172.80 and junior Nicole Nemmers was 12th at 152.25.

The Hawkeyes will return to the pool Friday, October 21st to host the University of Minnesota. The co-ed meet will start at 4 p.m. at the Fieldhouse Pool in Iowa City.
