AMES, IA – The University of Iowa women’s swimming team traveled to Ames Friday night to take on the Cyclones. The Hawkeyes were victorious by a score of 156-144. The women improve their season record to 4-3 (0-2 Big Ten).
The Hawkeyes were once again led by the seniors. Kelly Werner finished first in the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 100 butterfly, while senior diver Nancilea Underwood won the one-meter (291.37) and the three-meter (338.47). The 200 medley relay team of Alison Gschwend, Emmy Haeger, Kelly Werner and Katie Martin placed first. Martin, senior, also placed first in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 freestyle. The 400 freestyle team of Martin, Emily Hoefler, Robin Samples and Karen Kelly took top honors in a time of 3:31.25.
The Hawkeyes also had great performances from its freshmen. Alison Gschwend took second place in the 100 backstroke (58.04), Andrea Hemphill placed third in the 1,000 freestyle (10:42.65) and Ashley Dell and Heather Hall finished third and fourth in the 500 freestyle, with times of 5:11.55 and 5:12.07, respectively.
Up next for the Hawkeyes will be a winter training trip to Hawaii, January 2-12. The next competition will be a co-ed dual with Missouri at home. The meet is scheduled for January 21st at 1 p.m. in the Fieldhouse Pool in Iowa City.
