Johnson Named Gatorade Player of the Year

Jan. 25, 2006

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa freshman Alicia Johnson has been named the Gatorade Iowa Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. She is the first athlete in Iowa history to receive the award twice.

Johnson, a 5-11 rightside hitter from Tripoli, IA, graduated high school a semester early, enrolled in the University earlier this month and is participating in spring practice.

“We’re very pleased with the announcement of Alicia as the Gatorade Player of the Year,” said Iowa Head Coach Cindy Fredrick. “This is a tremendous honor for Alicia, and recognizes her work ethic and talent as a volleyball player. To earn this honor for the second straight year is a real testament to the kind of athlete and competitor she is. Alicia represents the kind of student-athlete we want to represent the Iowa volleyball program.”

Johnson is a four-time all-state selection, including Elite All-State honors her last three years. She is a four-time first team all-conference and all-district honoree, and has been named to the Iowa State Tournament all-tournament team four times. Johnson led Tripoli to three-straight state championships in 2003-05, while being named captain of the all-tournament team each year.

Johnson has also earned all-conference laurels in basketball and track, and was a three-year member of the honor roll.
