Bursting on the Scene

“Most of the coaches there were pretty amazed because everybody kept asking, `Who is she, where is she from?” UI Women’s Track Coach Jim Grant tells the Iowa City Press-Citizen in today’s editions of the newspaper.

She is Kineke Alexander. And earlier this month she burst on the collegiate track scene by winning the 400-meter dash at the 2006 NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships.

Alexander is only the third student-athlete in UI women’s track history to be crowned a national champion. Iowa’s previous NCAA titlists were Tracy Dahl in the 5,000 meters (1992 and 1993) and Nan Doak in the 10,000 (1985).
