THIS WEEK – The Iowa women’s golf team travels to Champaign, IL, Friday and Saturday to compete in the 36-hole Illini Spring Classic. Sixteen teams will play 18-holes each day on the par-72 Stone Creek Golf Course. The tournament is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m each day.
THE COMPETITION – The 16 competing teams include: Ball State, Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Eastern Illinois, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Illinois Weslyan, Indiana, Indianapolis, Iowa, Michigan, Northern Illinois, Oregon, Southern Indiana, Truman State and Western Michigan.
LINEUP – Competing for Iowa will be Jill Marcum, Karla Murra, Amy Riepma, Tyrette Metzendorf and Maggie Gelber. Melanie Boyles will be competing as an individual.
LAST COMPETITION – The Hawkeyes finished fourth (out of 19 teams) at the BYU Dixie Classic with a 948 (+84). Jill Marcum led the Hawkeyes with a 14 over par, 230, to finish tied for seventh. Karla Murra came in 19th, shooting 237 (+21). She carded a personal spring low round of 77.
SETTING RECORDS – Iowa set a new school record last fall with a 77.1 team scoring average. Freshman Tyrette Metzendorf is in first place on Iowa’s all-time individual top performances for 36-holes (145) reached at the Legends of Golf Shootout in the fall. Metzendorf is also in second place on Iowa’s individual performances for 54-holes, carding a 220 at the Hawkeye Intercollegiate.
HAWKEYE COACH – Coach Bobbe Carney is in her fourth year as Iowa’s head women’s golf coach. Last season, the Hawkeyes posted their best season under her guidance, finishing sixth in the Big Ten.
NEXT COMPETITION – Iowa returns to competition April 28-30 at the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, IN.
