Two members of the University of Iowa track team have already qualified for the NCAA Championship meet this June. Juniors Peaches Roach and Adam Hamilton have qualified in their respective field events today and will compete on the Sacramento State Campus June 7-10.
Roach placed third in the high jump today when she cleared 6-0.5. That jump is just .25 inches off her collegiate best and school record mark of 6-0.75. Hamilton qualified in the hammer throw with a toss of 217-11.
Two Hawkeye sprinters have advanced to the finals. Junior Tiffany Johnson qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with a collegiate best time of 13.24. Johnson also broke her own school record with the time; her previous high mark was 13.53. Sophomore Kineke Alexander will be running in the finals of the 400 meters after qualifying with the second-fastest time (52.76).
Several more Hawkeyes will have opportunities to qualify for the national meet tomorrow. Sophomore Shane Maier and freshmen A.J. Curtis, John Hickey and Mark Schaapveld compete in the shot put. Sophomore Meghan Armstrong looks to qualify in the 1,500 meters and senior Tony Rakaric will run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The final day of the NCAA Regional Championships continue tomorrow with field events scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and running events will start at 5:30 p.m.
