Sophomores Kineke Alexander, Meghan Armstrong and Shane Maier will be competing alongside some of the nation’s top talent in the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The three Hawkeyes join juniors Peaches Roach and Adam Hamilton as automatic qualifiers for the national meet.

Alexander won the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.75, just shy of the record time (51.71) she set at last year’s national meet. Alexander is the reigning NCAA indoor champion in the 400 meters, as well. Armstrong automatically qualified with her second place finish in the 1,500 meters. In the shot put, Maier qualified with a fifth-place toss of 61-0.25.

Though Alexander, Armstrong, Roach, Hamilton and Maier are automatically qualified, there is a chance that more Hawkeyes will compete in championships. After all regional meets are completed the NCAA makes at-large selections by placing the next seven athletes in their respective events into the national at-large pool.

The Iowa women finished the team competition in tenth place with 28 points and the Hawkeye men finished with 12 points, good enough for 19th place. The University of Texas won both sides of the regional meet, with 93 points for the Longhorn women and 91.83 points for the men.

The championship meet runs June 7-10 at the A.G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State University. For more information about the upcoming championships, go to www.hornetsports.com or visit www.ncaasports.com.
