Hickey Wins Shot Put

INDIANAPOLIS, IN –

University of Iowa freshman John Hickey (Piermont, NY) won the shot put at the 2006 USA Track and Field Junior National Championships in Indianapolis, IN, Thursday. His throw of 63-3 1/4 with the six-kilogram implement bested runner-up Eric Wersky, who competed unattached, by over a foot. With the win, Hickey qualifies to represent the United States at the IAAF World Junior Championships, Aug. 15-20 in Beijing, China.

Also competing for Iowa was junior Adam Hamilton (Milford, NH) and freshman A.J. Curtis (Brodhead, WI). Curtis placed ninth in the junior national shot put (56-0 1/2) Thursday after placing fifth in the discus on Wednesday. Hamilton, the 2006 Big Ten hammer throw champion, placed 24th in that event at the USATF Senior National Championships (193-0) Friday.
