Black Squad Takes Win In Annual Black and Gold Meet

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming team opened their season Saturday afternoon at the UI Fieldhouse with the annual Black and Gold intrasquad meet. After getting off to a quick start, the Black squad held off a Gold squad rally to win 125-112.

The Black squad got out to a quick start, winning both the men’s and women’s 200 yard medley relay. Ashley Dell kept the momentum going with a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Nick Divan got the Gold squad on the board with a win in the men’s 1,000 yard freestyle.

James Dragon led the Black squad with wins in both the 100 (52.37) and 200 (1:56.93) butterfly. Ashley Dell, Alison Gschwend, and Margie Chamberlin each picked up two individual wins for the Black squad.

The Gold squad was led by freshmen duo Christine Kuczek and Julie Feingold, who each picked up two wins. Sophomore Nick Divan got wins in the 1,000 free (9:38.66), 500 free (4:41.24) and the 200 IM (1:57.98).

“It’s very exciting to see everyone back in the pool, competing again, and a very fun atmosphere,” said Head Coach Marc Long.

The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming team will open its regular season at home on Friday, October 13th and Saturday, October 14th, when they host the University of Wisconsin Badgers and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. Friday’s meet is set for 5:00 p.m. and Saturday’s meet will begin at 10:00 a.m; both meets will be held at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse Pool.
