IOWA CITY — September 2006 was a very good month for the University of Iowa and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Kinnick Stadium was rededicated, Iowa’s football team won four of five games and ended the month ranked among the nation’s Top 25, the volleyball team established a new attendance record en route to victories in 11 of its first 12 matches, and hawkeyesports.com, the official world wide web site of the Iowa Hawkeyes reached new milestones for pages viewed and the number of unique visitors.
More than 2.6 million pages – 2,695,023 to be exact – were downloaded off the site during September, an increase of 16 percent over the total registered in September 2005 and the previous high-water mark for pages viewed in a single-month.
Equally impressive was the new record established for unique visitors in a single month. A total of 343,161 different IP addresses or “unique visitor” accessed hawkeyesports.com during September 2006, an increase of more than 30 percent over the total for September 2005. |

“hawkeyesports.com continues to prove itself as an excellent resource for friends of the UI and fans of the Iowa Hawkeyes. It is also proving to be the effective outreach tool that we had hoped it could become,” said Rick Klatt, the UI’s associate athletics director for external affairs.
hawkeyesports.com was redesigned for the fourth time in its history during the summer and the new look was rolled out in mid-September. The most significant change was the introduction of free video and the opportunity to highlight a series of stories with larger photographs on the home page.
The UI has also committed itself to increasing the quantity of audio and video content on the site. Evidence of this commitment is the addition of free audio of every match of the UI’s volleyball team.
“We are slowly but surely working down the path of providing an even greater level of service to our fans and our sports programs. Based on the feedback that we’ve received, we have arrived at the appropriate balance between free content and pay-to-listen, pay-to-view content,” said Klatt.
hawkeyesports.com’s “Hawkeye All-Access” multi-media space continues to be the only place on the world wide web where fans can watch each weekly press conference of Kirk Ferentz, Steve Alford, Lisa Bluder and Tom Brands live from start to finish, and the only place on the web where those four coaches’ post-competition press conference for home events is available.
The latest addition to hawkeyesports.com is the page labeled, “Wallpaper and more.” Currently, four pieces of wallpaper for use on fans’ computers are available. Additional art representing all varsity sports at the UI will be added to the site. Click HERE to visit that page of hawkeyesports.com and peruse the options.
