Ten Questions With Emily Hiza

What is it like seeing the look on the face of a hitter you just took a certain kill away from?

That’s what a libero lives for, to get into the head of a hitter… you know the next look will probably be a look of defeat.

Do you ever wish you could be a hitter again?

Part of me, especially the super aggressive part, will always be a hitter – or at least want to be. I think it’s that inner fighting spirit that makes playing fun.

When you put on your libero jersey, does wearing the opposite color make you feel left out or special?

Special, all the little girls ask me why I’m wearing the wrong jersey.

If you could bring one thing from home, what would it be?

My family, and some mountains to snowboard on. I love to snowboard and go when I get the opportunity. But it just so happens that volleyball and snowboarding season conflict so I haven’t been able to go that often recently – I guess that’s more than one.

What do you know as a sophomore you didn’t as a freshman?

How to make adjustments… not every team is going to need to be played the same as before, not every day is going to be lived the same as before.

Who would be in your ultimate rock band?

Jim Morrison, Carter Beauford (Dave Matthews drummer), Steven Stills (Crosby Stills and Nash), Ben Folds.

What is your favorite thing about Iowa City?

That the residents bleed black and gold! You can’t pass two people on the street without one of them wearing something Iowa.

If one member of the team had to be the Head Coach, who would you want it to be?

Jen Barcus. When we do scouting reports she’s all over every tendency and is so knowledgeable about the game.

Where do you expect to be in ten years?

A Jeopardy champion.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An Olympic swimmer or a Sea World whale trainer.
