IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming team finished their regular season opener Saturday morning with both the men and women splitting. The men defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers 246-105, but fell to the University of Wisconsin Badgers 240-111. The women defeated the Panthers 265.5-87.5 and fell to the Badgers 235.5-112.5.
Junior Dragos Agache led the Hawkeyes with a win in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:06.31) and swam on the 400 yard medley relay (3:29.03) team that placed second. Sophomore Nick Divan placed second in the 500 yard freestyle (4:35.54) and the 400 yard individual medley (4:07.22).
Freshman Julie Feingold led the Hawkeye women with second place finishes in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:25.29) and the 400 yard individual medley (4:40.40). Sophomore Ashley Dell placed second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:04.64) and third in the 400 yard individual medley (4:41.50)
Kasey Carpenter and Yi Ting Siow of the University of Wisconsin both set new pool records. Carpenter’s time of 1:59.49 beat the previous record of 1:59.98 by Sarah McCauley, also of Wisconsin set in 2002. Siow’s time of 2:11.24 smashed the previous record of 2:16.26 by Keri Hehn of Minnesota set in 2002.
The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action on Friday, October 20th, when they travel to Minneapolis to take on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. The meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the University Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus.
