Columbus, OH – The University of Iowa men’s swimming team competed at the final day of the Big Ten Championships hosted by the Ohio State University. The Hawkeyes finished in ninth place with 118 points, while Minnesota was crowned the team champion with 612.5 points.
Junior Dragos Agache set a new school record in the 200 breast with a 1:58.40 in the prelims. In the finals, Agache finished in 1:59.07 to place sixth. The previous record of 1:58.43 was set in 1990 by Rob Leyshon. Agache also set a new school record of 53.77 in Saturday’s 100 breast, which was good for third place. Agache had set the previous record of 53.94 at last year’s Big Ten Championships. Both times met NCAA B qualifying standards, which provisionally qualifies Agache for March’s NCAA Championships.
Freshman Michael Gilligan placed eighth in platform diving with 327.60. Junior Nate Keeling placed 13th in the 200 butterfly with a collegiate-best time of 1:48.74 in the prelims and 1:48.85 in the finals. Freshman Wil Whaley placed 17th in the 200 back with season-best 1:47.66 in the prelims, and 1:48.03 in the finals.
The Hawkeyes will next compete at the Iowa Senior Championships, to be held at the UI Fieldhouse Pool on March 2-4.
