CHICAGO — The greatest fans in major league baseball received a boost from the greatest fans in college football Friday, Aug. 31, during Iowa Day at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
More than 6,000 University of Iowa fans were on hand to cheer on the Cubs during a 6-1 setback to Houston. The Hawkeye contingent had more to holler about the following day as Iowa opened the season with a 16-3 football victory over Northern Illinois in Solider Field.
Gary Barta, director of athletics at the UI, threw out a ceremonial first pitch and former Hawkeye point guard BJ Armstrong sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame:” during the seventh-inning stretch. Armstrong was named all-Big ten while at Iowa and he went on to play for three Chicago Bulls teams that won NBA championships.
“It was pretty impressive to see all the Iowa fans at the ball park,” said Toby Trail, director of marketing at the UI. “It’s not often when you hear `Let’s go Hawks’ between innings at Wrigley Field.”
