Hawkeye Women Compete In Double Dual

IOWA CITY — The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team headed to Lincoln, NE on Saturday to compete in a double dual with Nebraska and Nevada-Reno. The meet put Iowa up against both squads in essentially two dual meets with separate scoring. The Hawkeyes lost to Nebraska by a score of 170-130 and to Nevada by a score of 158-142. The losses drop the women’s team to a 1-4 overall mark with a 1-2 record in Big Ten competition.

Swimming to first place finishes for Iowa was sophomore Julie deBruin in the 50 freestyle (23.95) and junior Alison Gschwend in the 200 backstroke (2:04.44), Gschwend also took second in the 100 backstroke (57.97). The Hawkeye 400 yard freestyle relay team of Alison Gschwend, Christine Kuczek, Julie deBruin, and Kelsie Neubauer also took home top honors for the night. Junior Ashley Dell was good enough for two second place finishes in the 1,000 (10:26.19) and 500 (5:05.50) freestyle as well as freshman Katarina Tour in the 200 IM (2:08.25). The Diving team was led by sophomore Deidre Freeman who picked up a second place finish in the one-meter diving competition (295.85).

The Hawkeyes will return to action on November 16th when they head to Kirksville, MO for a dual meet with Truman State. The men’s team will host Purdue next Friday at the Field House Pool.
