IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa men’s swimming and diving team hosted Purdue on Friday evening at the Field House Pool. Purdue got off to a fast start and never surrendered their lead. The Boilermakers came into the meet ranked number 14 nationally and carrying a 4-0 record in dual meets. The loss drops Iowa’s record to 1-3 (1-3 Big Ten).

“We are always looking towards the future and it is a little discouraging just looking at wins and losses,” said Iowa head coach Marc Long. “The Big Ten is a tough league, but that’s what we have to swim against. When half the team is freshmen it will be difficult at times but we are looking to improve and we are still looking towards February, but I am proud of the way they swam tonight.”

The Hawkeyes were led by freshman Conor Dwyer who picked up first place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:42.15) and 100 freestyle (46.78). Sophomore Wil Whaley took top honors in the 200 backstroke (1:51.38). The Hawkeye 400 freestyle relay (3:09.96) team of Whaley, Dwyer, Brad Jones, and Brian Farris took first place in the last event of the evening. The diving team was led by sophomore Michael Gilligan who won the one-meter diving competition (298.50) and was good enough for second in the three-meter competition (288.75).

The Hawkeyes will return to action next week on November 16th when they head to Kirksville, MO for a co-ed dual meet with Truman State.
