Hawkeyes Add Three Recruits

Nov. 16, 2007

IOWA CITY – Head Volleyball Cindy Fredrick has announced that Mallory Husz, Tiffany Nilges and Paige Stevens have signed National Letters of Intent to attend the University of Iowa next fall.

“It’s good to bring in three talented student-athletes in three key positions,” Fredrick said. “We think they will all have a positive impact on the program.”

Husz, a 6-0 middle blocker from Council Bluffs, IA, attends Lewis Central High School. She was named second team all-state and first team all-region and all-district as a sophomore and junior. Husz was also a two-time unanimous first team all-conference pick. She was named the Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil Volleyball Player of the Year as a sophomore and is ranked 91st nationally in her recruiting class according to prepvolleyball.com. She also played for the Top Ten Volleyball Club and helped them place eighth at the 2006 AAU Junior Nationals.

“Mallory is a middle hitter, who although not as tall as some in the Big Ten, is so athletic and quick that she should develop very quickly,” Fredrick said. “Mallory has a very good vertical jump, and packs some heat when she hits. She is a solid all around player.”

Nilges is a 5-11 outside hitter/middle blocker from Tripoli, IA, and attends Tripoli High School. She was a three-time all-state, all-district and all-conference selection. She led Tripoli to state tournament and Iowa Star conference titles in 2004 and 2005 and was named to the Class 1A state tournament all-tournament team as a freshman and sophomore. She also helped Tripoli qualify for the state tournament as a senior. Nilges also played for the Nike Six Pack club team for seven years and guided them to nationals four times.

“Tiffany has played middle, but will move to the outside for us,” Fredrick said. “She is an all around player – very good hitter, solid passer and defensive player.”

Stevens is a 6-0 setter from Naperville, IL, and attends Neuqua Valley High School. She was a second team all-state selection as a junior and a three-time unanimous all-conference pick. Stevens was named to the Naperville Sun and Daily Herald all-area teams as a junior and senior along with the Chicago Sun-Times all-area team as a senior. She was a two-time academic all-conference selection and was also named the 2007 NSCA Women’s Volleyball Student Athlete of the Year. Stevens played club volleyball for Sports Performance and was a member of the U-18 white, U-16 and U-15 red teams while being named to the USAV Girls’ 16 American all-tournament team.

“Paige is a talented setter out of a very strong club program,” Fredrick said. “She brings a solid work ethic and great attitude to the court. At 6-1, Paige will be a solid blocker as well as a very good setter.”
