COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving team was in Columbus competing in day three of the Ohio State invitational. The women’s team finished in third place scoring 455 points while the men wrapped up the invitational in sixth with 250 points. The three day event started Friday morning and concluded Sunday afternoon. This was the Hawkeyes first championship meet of the season and assistant coach Frannie DeBord liked what she saw:
“With all the freshmen we have on our team it was exciting to see them compete in their first championship meet. Six sessions is a long meet, but it was good to see them stay strong and improve their times from the prelims to the finals.”
With 15 schools being represented, the invite presented the Hawkeyes with top-notch competition.
“This was a great opportunity, and we saw some outstanding swimming,” commented head coach Marc Long. “Overall, we competed very well against some of the top swimmers in the nation and I like what I saw from some of our young team.”
Top finishers for the men were Wil Whaley in the 200 backstroke (fourth, 1:47.69). Top five finishes were brought home for the women by Ashley Dell in the 1,650 freestyle (fourth, 16:55.03), Christine Kuczek in the 100 freestyle (fourth, 51.18), Margie Chamberlin in the 100 butterfly (fifth, 56.59) and Katarina Tour in the 100 breaststroke (fourth, 1:03.94). Top relay performance included the 200 freestyle relay team of Julie deBruin, Kuczek, Tour, and Caitlin Carlyle (fifth, 1:35.36); the 400 medley relay team of Alison Gschwend, Tour, Chamberlin, and Kuczek (fifth, 3:51.00); the 200 medley relay team of Gschwend, Tour, Chamberlin, and deBruin (fourth 1:45.30); and the 400 freestyle relay team of Kuczek, deBruin, Gschwend, and Carlyle (second, 3:25.94). Iowa diver Frank Van Dijkhuizen shattered his previous season best on the three-meter board with a score of 359.20.
“The meet was extremely exciting and we swam as well as we hoped as a team,” said coach DeBord. “There were many season and lifetime bests set for our swimmers this weekend going against potential NCAA champions. Overall, the meet was very positive and things are looking very bright for the future of our team.”
The Hawkeyes will return to action when the women travel to Ames to take on Iowa State on December 7th. The men’s next competition is January 5th at the Florida International Invitational.
