Iowa Swimmers Ready For Missouri and Kansas

Jan. 21, 2008

THIS WEEK — The Iowa men and women’s swimming and diving teams will head to Columbia, MO Saturday for a meet with Missouri and Kansas. The women will compete in a dual with both schools, while the men will only swim against Missouri. The Iowa men currently hold a record of 3-3 (1-3 Big Ten) and the women are 4-5 (2-2 Big Ten).

ON MISSOURI — The Missouri men are ranked 19th in the nation and enter the meet with a dual meet record of 9-2. The Tigers most recently went 3-1 in a dual meet challenge against Maryland, #16 Penn State, Pittsburgh and Villanova, in Pittsburgh.

The Missouri women are ranked 18th in the nation with a record of 10-1. The Tigers share two common opponents with the Hawkeyes, Illinois and Iowa State. Missouri was victorious against both squads while Iowa was narrowly edged by Iowa State last month and beat Illinois January 19.

The Iowa men hold an all-time series edge against Missouri at 6-2, with its last win against the Tigers in 2004. The women are 3-4 all-time against the Tigers with their last win in 2001.

ON KANSAS — Kansas enters the meet with a 5-2 record, including a win against Nebraska, who the Hawkeyes lost to earlier this season. The Hawkeyes are 4-1 all-time against the Jayhawks, with the only loss coming two season ago in Lawrence.

LAST COMPETITION — The last two meets have provided the Iowa swimming program with three wins. Both the men’s and women’s teams earned a victory against Western Illinois on January 18. Led by freshman Richard Salhus and freshman Katarina Tour, respectively, Iowa took the meet by a final tally of 159-63 (men) and 144-71 (women). Saturday provided another opportunity for the Hawkeye women to improve their record, as well as their Big Ten record, against Illinois. Led by sophomore Christine Kuczek, Iowa did just that by ousting the Illini, 170-120.

FREEMAN ON FIRE — Iowa’s sophomore diver Deidre Freeman has won the last four diving events she has competed in, with victories on the one and three meter boards against both Western Illinois and Illinois.
