Jan. 22, 2008

PARK RIDGE, IL — Hawkeye junior thrower John Hickey has been named Big Ten co-Field Event Athlete of the Week for his collegiate-best performance last week at the season-opening Iowa Open in Iowa City. Hickey shares the honor with Purdue sophomore Jon Pullum.

Hickey provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with his winning and collegiate-best throw of 61-3 (18.67 meters). Only former Hawkeye Jeremy Allen, who holds the school shot put record of 62-10 1/2 (19.16 meters) has thrown shot farther in school history. It is Hickey’s first weekly conference honor. Iowa’s last conference indoor field event athlete of the week was senior Shane Maier on Jan. 16, 2007.

Iowa’s next competition will be Saturday at the Jack Johnson Classic in Minneapolis, MN. All events will be held at the University of Minnesota Field House.
