Hairston Breaks Record; Women Qualify Four

Feb. 9, 2008

SOUTH BEND, IN – The men and women track team combined for a total of five NCAA provisional qualifiers, two first place finishes and one school record breaking performance.

Sophomore Adam Hairston was the highlight for the men’s side. He took first in the 800 meters with a school record and provisional qualifying time of 1:49.86. The previous record stood at 1:51.27 set by Dave Novotny in 1996. Junior John Hickey and senior Shane Maier took first and second in the shot put with tosses of 57-3 ½ and 56-6 respectively.

The women’s team provisionally qualified four for the NCAA championships. Seniors Meghan Armstrong and Diane Nukuri improved their previous qualifying marks in the 3,000 meters by over four seconds each. Armstrong crossed the finish line in third (9:20.02) and Nukuri fourth (9:20.07). Senior Kineke Alexander provisionally qualified in the 400 meters with a third place time of 53.86, .06 behind first. The Hawkeyes’ fourth provisional qualifier was junior Renee White in the triple jump. She had a season best leap of 42-0 ½, good enough for second place.

“Any time we can walk away from a meet with a school record, provisional qualifications and lifetime-best performances, it’s a great day,” UI head women’s coach Layne Anderson said. “We still need to fire up in a couple areas, but at this point of our season we just want to stay the course and keep improving. We’re making progress and starting to get into great shape.”

The Iowa men and women will both compete at the Cyclone Classic in Ames or the Husky Classic in Seattle, WA on Feb. 15-16.
