COLUMBUS, OH – The University of Iowa women’s swimming and diving team was in Columbus, OH for the commencement of the 2008 Big Ten Swimming Championships. The 26th annual event is being held at McCorkle Aquatic Pavillion on the campus of Ohio State University. After day one, the Hawkeyes are in ninth place with 51.5 points.
Iowa swimmers set season bests in every event of the evening which included junior Ashley Dell in the 500 freestyle (4:53.69), freshman Katarina Tour in the 200 IM (2:03.72), sophomore Julie deBruin in the 50 freestyle (23.33) and both the 200 free relay (1:32.95) and 400 medley relay (3:44.05). Of these times, both relays, as well as Dell’s preliminary 500 free and Tour’s preliminary 200 IM, met NCAA `B’ qualifying standards. Junior Alison Gscshwend’s lead off time of 55.67 in the 400 medley relay also met `B’ qualifying standards for the 100 backstroke.
The 200 freestyle relay team of deBruin, sophomore Christine Kuczek, Gschwend and Tour set a new school record with a time of 1:32.95. The previous record of 1:33.30 was set in 2002. The 400 medley relay time of 3:44.05 was good enough for second all-time at Iowa, and less than a second behind the 2002 time of 3:43.42.
Head Coach Marc Long commented after the meet, “It was an exciting day of swimming and I am really looking forward to two more competitive days.”
