DES MOINES, IA – Members of the University of Iowa men and women’s track teams competed at the Drake Relays, Thursday. Senior Tammilee Kerr placed second in the heptathlon with 5,417 points breaking her previous school record. Senior Ryan Niver placed seventh in the decathlon with sophomore Frank Prill taking 14th.

“We had a very solid outing and obviously Tammilee had a life-time day,” Women’s Head Coach Layne Anderson said. “She put up a solid mark for Nationals which was the main objective.”

After the two day event, Kerr managed to provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Yesterday, she was third in the shot put and the high jump, fourth in the 200 meters and fifth in the 100-meter hurdles. Today, she took first in the javelin, fifth in the 800 meters and ninth in the long jump. Kerr placed five points ahead of former Hawkeye Peaches Roach who was competing unattached.

“Tammilee turned in a good first day but I think she left some points out there during the second day,” Anderson said. “We also had a couple other solid races and it looks like we are setting up for a good Drake Relays.”

In her first 10,000 meters race, sophomore Fionna Fallon placed 12th with a time of 38:55.95. Junior Krista Anderson ran a time of 4:39 in the unseeded 1,500 meters.

Niver finished the decathlon with a personal best 6,837 points. The performance fell two points short of Scott Faber’s school record set in 2000 and 63 points short of the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Yesterday, Niver placed fifth (long jump), sixth (100 meters), seventh (shot put) and 13th (400 meters). Today, he took first (discus), fourth (high jump), sixth (pole vault), eighth (javelin), tenth (110-meter hurdles) and 13th (1,500 meters). Throughout competition, Niver set a career-best in the discus (142-10) and 1,500 meters (4:41.42).

Prill finished with a total of 5,580 points in the decathlon, marking his first performance in the event. He placed third in the 400 and seventh in the 1,500 meters. Prill set a personal-best in the long jump with a leap of 20-1.

Sophomore Jesse Luciano placed 11th in his first 5,000 meters race with a time of 14:27.31.

The Hawkeyes will continue competition at the Drake Relays, Friday at 9:30 a.m.
