Chicago, IL – On Wednesday, June 4, the Big Ten Network says “Go Hawks!” with 24 consecutive hours of Iowa programming.
The day will include some of Iowa’s best performances in 2007-08, including the Big Ten Wrestling Championship, the softball team’s upset of Michigan, a victory against Michigan State in the Big Ten Field Hockey semifinals and the women’s basketball team’s thriller over Minnesota.
At 9 PM ET, the Big Ten Network will present a special edition of Big Ten Tonight, the Iowa Year in Review. The show will recap all the great Hawkeye moments of the past 12 months.
In addition to the most recent triumphs, the network will also re-air two Iowa victories from the series, Big Ten’s Greatest Games, including the men’s basketball game against Connecticut (1995) and the football game against Michigan (1990).
The programming schedule also contains four episodes of campus programming produced by the University of Iowa, including James Van Allen: Flights of Discovery, Lasansky: Inside the Image, and the debuts of The Making of Dance Gala and Iowa Caucuses.
Throughout the month of June, the Big Ten Network will air university-themed programming for a full 24 hours devoted to each of the Big Ten member institutions, including Purdue (June 2), Iowa (June 4), Michigan (June 5), Illinois (June 9), Indiana (June 11), Northwestern (June 12), Ohio State (June 16), Penn State (June 18), Wisconsin (June 19), Minnesota (June 23) and Michigan State (June 25).

5 am – Big Ten Women’s Basketball
Iowa 72, Minnesota 69 (2/17/08)
Wendy Ausdemore scored 17 first-half points as Iowa appeared to run away from Minnesota. But the Gophers rallied and took the lead in the second half. A pair of late buckets by Krista VandeVenter sealed the win for the Hawkeyes, who used the victory to claim a share of the 2008 Big Ten Conference championship and a berth in the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Lasansky: Inside the Image
“Lasansky: Inside the Image”commemorates the philosophy, work, and innovations of one of the world’s great artists. His contributions to the art of printmaking are housed in scores of public collections throughout the world. This in depth program displays the techniques and the colorful, intense, and powerful work of Mauricio Lasansky, Professor-Emeritus of Art & Art History at the University of Iowa. The documentary exposes the wonderful philosophy that is Lasansky and provides us with a rare glimpse into the mind of one of the world’s great artists. “There is no point in being an artist unless everything you do is done with love for your work,” Lasansky explains as he expresses his desire to help students learn the need for a passionate involvement in their work.

James Van Allen: Flights of Discovery
Narrated by Tom Brokaw, this documentary chronicles the life of a great American, Dr. James Van Allen, Professor-Emeritus of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Iowa. Dr. Van Allen was the first U.S. scientist in space and discovered the radiation belts surrounding the earth that bear his name. Through his enormous contributions and history making experiences, the documentary explores an era of U.S. history heretofore seldom and incompletely seen, explained, or exposed. For the first time, interviews with Van Allen and his associates, those who lived the events, provide a rare behind the scenes look at the development of the U.S. space program and, quite surprisingly, a first heard account of what were some of the most top secret government activities and events during the early days of the Cold War and the “race for space.” The documentary also relates the history of Van Allen’s flights to the outer planets as well as his space odyssey via Pioneer 10. Launched in 1972 to explore Jupiter, the Pioneer 10 spacecraft, is now billions of miles from earth.

Men’s Basketball: Iowa 101, Connecticut 95 (OT) (11/24/95)
Chris Kingsbury, who scored a team-high 30 points, buried a spectacular three-pointer with a minute left in regulation. The Hawkeyes dominated the overtime period to upset Ray Allen and sixth-ranked Connecticut.

The Making of Dance Gala
“Performing Iowa: Dance Gala” goes behind the scenes of Iowa’s premier dance event, showcasing the artistry and athleticism at one of the largest and most respected dance programs in the country. Dancers and choreographers share their insights and feelings about what it takes to develop Dance Gala and what it means to be totally involved in dancing. “Performing Iowa: Dance Gala” is the University of Iowa’s first original high-definition program for the Big Ten Network.

First in the Nation: The Iowa Caucuses
This documentary explores the grassroots efforts of the people of Iowa as they caucus to select presidential candidates for democrats and republicans on the night of January 3, 2008. Four political scholars from The University of Iowa, along with several caucus goers, help demystify and explain this unique, and highly participatory, democratic process. The viewer receives a rare inside view of the distinctions between the Republican and Democrat Party procedures as well as the differences between the average voter’s perception and those held by the national media. A small army of videographers scattered around various cities and towns on caucus night to capture the often astute, sometimes chaotic, experience known as… The Iowa Caucuses.

The Hawkeyes erased a 2-1 deficit in the second half with goals from Adrienne Dybus and Caroline Blaum Iowa avenged its regular season loss to Michigan State and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament final.
3 pm – Big Ten Softball
Iowa 2, Michigan 1 (4/4/08)
Colleen McGlaughlin hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give Iowa a 2-1, upset win over fifth-ranked Michigan. The Hawkeye victory spoiled Michigan’s home opener and snapped their seven-game win streak.

Sophomore Brent Metcalf was named Outstanding Wrestler and the Hawkeyes won their 32nd Big Ten team title. Iowa scored 127 points, while runner-up Minnesota tallied 112.5.

Football: Iowa 24, Michigan 23 (10/20/90)
The Hawkeyes remained undefeated in the Big Ten with a 24-23 victory in Ann Arbor. Trailing 23-17 with less than five minutes to go, Matt Rodgers marched Iowa 85 yards for the go-ahead score. It was Michigan’s first Homecoming loss in 22 years.
