Iowa Men Defeat Wisconsin In Conference Opener

The Iowa swimming and diving team hosted the Wisconsin Badgers in their conference opener Friday at the Field House Pool.

In an exciting start to the meet, the Hawkeye men narrowly defeated the Badgers in the 200 Medley Relay. The team of Max Dittmer, Ryan Phelan, James Dragon and Duncan Partridge took first in the event with a time of 1:32.42, which knocked 4 seconds off of the Iowa men’s 200 Medley Relay time posted at last week’s meet against Truman State. The Hawkeye women took second and fifth place in the women’s 200 Medley Relay. The Hawkeye women also had first, third, and fifth place finishes in the 200 Fly, with Iowa junior Laura Mozdzen taking first place in the event with a time of 2:08.35.

The meet remained a close competition for the Iowa men and women throughout the evening. The Hawkeye men led the Wisconsin men 125-82 after the 200 Breaststroke, but the Hawkeye women were trailing the Wisconsin women 155-52. In the end, the Iowa men’s team came away with the win over Wisconsin with a final score of 166 to 134.

For women’s diving, junior Deidre Freeman came away with wins in the one meter and three meter dive, scoring 299.78 and 269.93 respectively. Christine Kuczek also had a big night for the Hawkeye women. The junior placed second in the 500 Free with a 5:01.69 and fourth in the 100 Free with a time of 52.13.

The Hawkeyes saw nine first place finishes throughout the night in the men’s competition. Sophomore Sean Hagan earned two, the first in the 100 Breast with a time of 57.18 and the second in the 200 Breast with a 2:05.90. The other wins came in the 1,000 Free, 200 Free, 50 Free, one meter dive, 100 Free and three meter dive.

Iowa will return to competition on October 25 when they travel to East Lansing, MI to face Michigan State. Competition will start at approximately 11:00 a.m. (CT).
