IOWA CITY – Head Volleyball Coach Sharon Dingman has announced today that Allison Straumann has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Iowa next fall. Straumann is the first commitment of the 2009 recruiting class.
“The first thing we noticed about Allison is that she is a competitor,” Dingman said. “The more competitive the environment, the more she thrives. She is a wonderful athlete with a smooth jump and arm swing. We anticipate Allison being a six rotation player for us.”
“Allison has had great coaching throughout her club and high school careers,” Dingman added. “She will be ready for the college game.”
Straumann is a 5-11 outside hitter from Cary, IL, and attends Cary Grove High School. She was recently named first team all-state by the Chicago Sun-Times and first team all-area by the Chicago Daily Herald. She collected 295 kills, 267 digs, 42 total blocks and 32 service aces in 102 sets played as a senior. Straumann was a team captain as a senior and also was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. She also set a school record for career-kills with 796.
In 2007 as a junior, Straumann was a third team all-state selection by the Chicago Sun-Times and a second team all-area pick by the Chicago Daily Herald. She set a school record for kills in a match with 19 and finished the season with 294. Straumann also tallied 274 digs, 59 total blocks and 30 service aces.
Straumann led her team to three Fox Valley Conference championships (2005, 2006 and 2008) along with a regional championship in 2007. She is only the second player from Cary Grove High School to be selected to an all-state team.
Straumann has also played for the Sky High Volleyball Club for the past three years. She has led the team to Nationals all three seasons, placing first the previous two seasons and second in her first season.
