IOWA CITY, IA – Former Hawkeye and Iowa City native Dr. John Kelley has been named honorary referee for Saturday’s men’s track meet against Big Ten rival Illinois.
Kelley, a long-time Iowa City physician, was a member of Iowa’s Big Ten title winning squad in 1967. He and current men’s head coach Larry Wieczorek were teammates. He also attended high school at City High in Iowa City, competing for long-time coach and current Hawkeye volunteer assistant coach John Raffensperger.
“This is a fun and exciting way to start the 2009 season,” explained Wieczorek. “Not too many meets use a dual team scoring format anymore, so it will be a “throwback” meet. The Iowa-Illinois rivalry should bring out some great performances.”
The meet will be held at the University of Iowa Recreation Building and events are set to start at noon. Admission is free. The meet will be scored and a team trophy will be awarded to the winning school after the meet.
