Hawkeye Duo Advances To NCAA Zone C Finals

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Hawkeye juniors Deidre Freeman and Frank Van Dijkhuizen advanced to Saturday’s finals of the 2009 Zone C NCAA Qualifier in Minneapolis, MN. A total of five Iowa divers are competing at the three-day event.

Freeman placed 10th on the women’s one-meter board with a 12-dive total of 504.35. The Grinnell, IA, native posted a 243.10 in the prelims and a 261.25 in the finals. Van Dijkhuizen placed 15th on the men’s three-meter with a 12-dive total of 646.00. He scored a 313.10 in the prelims and a 332.90 in the finals.

Also competing for the Hawkeyes were senior Drew DeLashmutt, junior Michael Gilligan and sophomore Veronica Rydze. Gilligan placed 20th on the men’s three-meter (292.35), while DeLashmutt placed 25th (270.85). Rydze placed 23rd on women’s one-meter (228.15).

In Friday’s first day of competition, Van Dijkhuizen and Gilligan advanced to the men’s one-meter finals, while Freeman and Rydze advanced to the women’s three-meter finals. Gilligan placed 13th with a combined 12-dive score of 585.05 (292.05, 293.00), while Van Dijkhuizen was close behind in 15th with a total of 575.95 (292.25, 283.70). Freeman placed 11th with a 12-dive total of 544.30 (292.35, 251.95), and Rydze placed 18th with a total of 509.15 (243.90, 266.25).

The men and women’s platform, which is the final event of the competition, is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Sunday (CT). All events will be held at the University of Minnesota’s Aquatic Center.
